The Leather Market is a Grade II listed building in Bermondsey, South London and was originally the hub of the leather trade during the 19th century. Tanning was banned from the City of London due to the smells generated and moved to Bermondsey as it was outside the City’s jurisdiction.

The building was constructed during the era of architectural sculpture, which explains its spectacular stone reliefs that demonstrate the processes of individuals turning raw skins into processed leather. The building avoided demolition during the 1990’s and is now a permanent reminder of the area’s heritage, and now provides a vibrant workspace for growing businesses south of the Thames.

Our long-standing client Workspace appointed us to restore and replace the building’s damaged stone and masonry, along with repairing and replacing windows and associated decoration and roofing works. The £350k project was completed within the scheduled 16 weeks.
