Bon Marché is an iconic building in the centre of Brixton and has a unique standing in the construction industry having been the first steel framed building to be constructed in the UK and opened its doors as the first purpose built department store in 1887. The building has recently had a complete refurbishment by Havering based specialists HBS who assembled a team of skilled operatives and contractors from their tried and tested supply chain.

The contract overseen by HBS Project Manager, Bill Bridge, included cleaning and painting render, removal of loose stucco render and complete refurbishment of all metalwork and architectural features. The contract was completed on time and on budget without causing any undue inconvenience to occupants of the building or the general public.

The roof was refurbished by HBS using a Liquid Roofing System which is not only very quick but also negates the need for any naked flames obviously reducing the fire risk to this building and surrounding dwellings. HBS have been accredited installers of this system for 5 years and find its H&S advantages are very quickly appreciated by property owners, insurance companies, building managers and local authorities.

The building remains a hub of the community containing shops and A4e (Action For Employment) which helps and retrains local people in preparation for the jobs market. Bon Marché will continue to be a notable landmark for many years to come.
