HBS Appointed to Decorate Oxo Tower Wharf

HBS have been appointed by Coin Street Community Builders to carry out the external re-decoration to the Oxo Tower Wharf development (www.oxotower.co.uk). HBS project Director Andrew Pratt said “we are really excited to be working on such a high profile building such the Oxo Tower. It really is a testament to the high quality of work our teams produce and the professionalism of our business”.

The Oxo building is an iconic London landmark, built at the end of the 18th Century as a power station for the Post Office, subsequently acquired by the Liebig Extract of Meat Company, manufacturers of Oxo beef stock cubes for conversion to a cold store. Much of the original building, except for the river facing façade, was demolished and rebuilt to an Art Deco design by architect Albert Moore between 1928 and 1929. Liebig wanted a tower featuring illuminated advertising signs for their product but this was refused and the tower was built with four sets of three vertically-aligned windows, each of which “coincidentally” happened to be in the shapes of a circle, a cross and a circle.

In the 1970’s and 1980’s when the building was in dis-repair, there were proposals to demolish which met with strong local opposition and resulted in the purchase by the GLC who then sold the entire 13 acre site to the non-profit Coin Street Community Builders.

In the 1990’s the £20 million refurbishment was designed by architects Lifschutz Davidson with the space to include housing, restaurants, shops and exhibition space, winning numerous awards along the way. Today Oxo Tower Wharf is a thriving mixed-use neighbourhood that attracts huge numbers of visitors each year.
